Benin – Thursday, 20th October 2016, the Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa of Benin Kingdom, Edo State, has been crowned as the 39th Oba of Benin. He picked a name on Tuesday after defeating Edigin N’Use in the traditional Akhue game (marble seeds).

The new Oba, whom on Tuesday picked a new royal name after defeating Edigin N’Use in the traditional Akhue game (marble seeds). He shall onward be called Oba Ewuare II of Benin Kingdom.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, as part of the ceremony, presented him with the staff of office.

The event was graced by Royal Fathers, Political Leaders, and Members of the Diplomatic Corps.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun, Aliko Dangote, All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, were among the dignitaries present.

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan, were also present at the event.

Some of countries whose diplomats were present include Great Britain, Namibia, Senegal, Italy, Burkinafaso, Senegal, Mauritania, Mali and Spain.

Others were Denmark, Sweden, Tanzania, Sao Tome, South Sudan, Argentina, Botswana, Angola and Albania.

The Oba had served as a Nigerian diplomat in several countries.

Good to be a witness!!!

But fortunately and unfortunately, this coronation is seen or heard once in a long while. Similar to the death of Roman Catholic Pontiff, there is an enclave that participates in the adoption and coronation of the successor, the representative of Peter (The Rock).

Anyway, these images appear to be among the first to be publicly released. I enjoyed it.

I think South West Lagos has similar rituals once similar position is vacant. I pray the incumbent lives a long time.

Can you now see? African culture is beautiful. The white men brought Christianity and Islam to make us forget who we are. How can an African man believe Jesus died for his sins in far away Israel? We seriously need to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery and go back to our roots and traditions
